Day Two

Day 2 - Travelled to Saskatoon and Initial Meeting with Dr Glen Aikenhead

After a 2 hour flight from Vancouver I arrived in Saskatoon. Dr Glen Aikenhead http://www.usask.ca/education/people/aikenhead/ was wonderful and collected me from the airport at 7pm local time. It was a 'warm' -7C. We had our first informal meeting, where I outlined my goals for my meetings with Glen and he provided me with further background on his research and education programs. I searched out Glen for this study tour as his was a reoccurring name when I was seeking information on delivering Indigenous perspectives through the Science curriculum.

My goals are to seek:

  • information on what and how Indigenous knowledge can be shared in the Science classroom by a  non-Indigenous teacher
  • information on how to begin developing cross-cultural Science lessons and units of work
  • information on approaching local Indigenous community members for assistance with programming
  • successes of pre-existing units of work in Canada
